Stop Hiding the Pieces That Matter
As a good Southern entertainer, we are taught that finer things in a home were meant to be tucked away. Porcelain china and glassware should be wrapped carefully and stored for special occasions. Growing up, heirlooms were kept behind closed doors and protected rather than admired daily.
Over time, I have come to believe in the opposite. A home feels most like you when the pieces that matter are allowed to be seen and dare I say … USED?
My oversized china cabinet is one of my favorite examples of that idea in practice. It holds glassware and serving pieces passed down to me over generations, each one tied to a family member, a memory, and a particular chapter of life. Rather than storing them out of sight, they are celebrated and admired.
That visibility changes everything. Items that once felt precious and untouchable become woven into daily life. I am reminded of the people I love, mostly women, and the memories that surrounded their kitchens.
Rather than sitting unused in a box, and seldom celebrated, they are always on full display in all their glory!
There is a practical beauty to this approach. When everything is visible and within reach, hosting feels natural rather than an effort. There is no searching through shelves, no hesitation about which pieces are safe to use. The table comes together easily because the pieces are already part of the rhythm of the home.
This has shifted how I think about storage altogether. Cabinets and open shelves do not have to hide things. They can tell a story, reflect what you love, show what you have chosen to keep close. Display becomes an act of intention rather than decoration.
Not every piece needs to be on view. But the ones that carry meaning deserve a place where they can shine. When objects with history and personal significance surround you, a home stops feeling styled and starts feeling like you.
If something matters to you, display it! Precious heirlooms belong where you can see and celebrate them.
