The Pieces That Earn Their Place
Some pieces earn their place in a home over time. Not because they were expensive or perfectly styled from the beginning, but because they show up again and again, adapting to whatever season you are in.
This pine chest is one of those pieces for us.
I found it on Facebook Marketplace when we were living in Charleston. A law firm was going out of business, and this chest was part of what they were clearing out. I remember paying a couple hundred dollars for it, which felt like a big decision at the time. It was a stretch in my world, but something about it felt solid and worth trusting.
Since then, it has lived in every home we have had. At one point, it served as our pantry when we were living in a garage on Council Street. Later, it shifted into general storage. Today, it houses Seth’s record collection. Its role has changed many times, but it has never felt out of place.
What I love about this piece is not just how it looks, but how willing it has been to evolve. It has never been precious. It has worked hard, held what we needed it to hold, and adapted as our life changed around it.
This chest reminds me that good pieces do not need to be fixed in one purpose. The best ones grow with you. Over time, function turns into familiarity, and familiarity turns into meaning.
Some furniture fills a space. Other pieces quietly become part of your story.
